    Hi! For ABO Sample Case #6, one of the questions was about the negative consequences of a non-extraction treatment plan. I got the other answers for the question, but was confused about how a non-extraction approach could lead to an increased vertical dimension (higher mandibular plane angle). Could you please clarify how this would occur in non-extraction treatment? (Pictures of the case are attached below). Thanks!

    There is some debate in the litterature over this topic that I’ve seen recently. But my basic understanding and clinical experience is as follows…

    Extractions are helpful for controlling the vertical because in the closure of space and retraction there is a deepening effect on the bite. So helpful with a bimax protrusive case and helps with anterior open bite cases as well. There is vertical change but the largest change is on incisor angulations.

    Non-extraction in presence of severe crowding has the effect of opening the bite as you align and reducing overbite as the incisors are proclined.
