I find myself getting the answers roughly correct, but in the wrong way. I have a few questions about the mechanics of answering questions:

    1. Should I not give explanations? I find myself answering like this – Advance mandibular molars and incisors through a combination of normal growth and growth modification. Then your answer is – Advance mandibular first molars.

Is less more when answering these types of questions?

    2. The second problem is that I will give reasons or mechanics on questions like what are the ideal treatment outcomes. Then I get to how could you improve the deep bite and I say something to this effect. Extrude posterior teeth (your answer would be bite ramps). Level curve of Spee (use RCOS wires).

So I am somehow confusing when to say what tools I will use and what the desired outcome is.

Does this make sense? My fear is that I will understand the information I need to for the exam, but present it incorrectly for the desired answer.

Michael, thanks for being a part of the course! You are hitting at the heart of the matter here and a great question.

I completely understand the tendency to jump into treatment – that’s how we function everyday.

However, you only need to answer the specific question. If it says “What are the skeletal objectives?” then you can create the ideal skeletal outcome and not say a word about treatment.

These questions are broken down into the 4 domains to test different areas. You could get the dental objectives all correct in one question and then miss an item or two in the treatment management section.

Since this is a timed test, I would recommend focusing on just the question at hand. The sample cases we have created here are based on the format presented by the ABO sample cases and their sample questions. If you spend time talking about treatment when it is only asking for objectives then you lose test time.

So just like Star Wars ….”Stay on target”. You got this!
