    Good comment! Yes, it is a side effect of the appliance but you are correct it is the effect we want. Side effects can be good or bad. Sometimes we use what might be considered an “unwanted side effect” in some treatments to help us out as a good side effect in others. Maybe the question isn’t clear about just asking for all side effects.

    thank you for your reply. I think I am a little confused still…. Does it mean that the only affect of the functional appliance is encouraging mandibular advancement? all the dental changes are side affects?

      Sorry Chinyere, not trying to be confusing here. I would consider everything a side effect of the appliance or if you want to just take out “side” – then effects of the particular appliance. I would then sort out what is the “good” or “bad” that I want for the particular patient. Does that help?
