Hello! Since the question did not provide information regarding if the patient’s etiology of the open bite Should I not to consider including habit appliance as treatment options for prompt 6 ( What treatment options should you consider for the patient) and Prompt 7 ( assuming non surgical what is treatment sequence)

Also in terms of prompt 6 ( What treatment options should you consider) I did not put orthognathic surgery as as option since the patient was a CS 3 however in my thought process I said surgery could be an options once patient has stopped growth. Could you explain why surgery is an option now?

    Bianca,

    Great comments!

    1) That’s perfect to have orthognathic surgery once growth complete. I would not prepare her for orthognathic surgery at this time. I would present it as an option for treatment and then time starting treatment past growth.

    2) I like the thoughts on the habit appliance. There is no history given so maybe it could be worded as “Evaluate patient for habit and if present, initiate habit appliance therapy before comprehensive treatment”. How does that sound? It show’s you’re thinking about it, that you add it in to your exam and then act on it based on the findings.

    Good luck!

    Nice thoughts here!

    Thank you!

Also, since we are talking about other treatment options, could we add as alternative treatment plan extractions of first premolars? Since she has proclined, protrusive incisors, mentalis strain and extractions usually tend to deepen the bite. Just another thought here to see if that would be considered viable option for the real exam.
